We were delighted when two of our members,
Vic and Jackie Edwards, told us that they thought a Pageant
presentation would be welcomed during assembly at the school where
Vic has been working as Premises Manager for a considerable number
of years. Gallions Mount School is in Plumstead, London (see the
school
website for further details). We contacted the Headteacher, Margaret Wyeth and agreed to
give two presentations, one to the Juniors and the other to the
Infants, on a Monday morning.
We duly arrived and set up our laptop to work
with the school projector system - surprisingly, this all worked
first time without any problems at all! Our story about a little
Gambian boy went down well, as did some short videos of nursery
school children in class and some junior children singing a song.
We had also taken some Gambian clothes for
the children and teachers to dress up in and some wooden animals,
beaded necklaces and musical instruments that had been made in The
Gambia. We had a really enjoyable morning - both groups of children
were interested and attentive and asked some very good questions.
They were very keen to dress up in the clothes, the highlight being
when the teachers were also prevailed upon to dress up, resulting in
great merriment and applause.
The suggestion that they might like to have a
Gambian stall at the school Christmas fair was received with real
enthusiasm, so Vic and Jackie are going to visit the local markets
during their trip in October. There they will buy a selection of the
things that the children were most enthusiastic about and the aim is
to raise funds to help a Gambian school in some way.
We would like to take this opportunity of
thanking Margaret Wyeth and her staff for a very enjoyable morning -
and also Vic and Jackie for the introduction (and for lunch!)
