Pencils,
coloured pencils and crayons collection at Westdene Primary School,
Brighton, for children at Abuko Nursery School and Albion LBS in The
Gambia
Ann and Brian Keating, recently spent a most enjoyable afternoon at
Westdene Primary School in Brighton, where they gave a short
presentation about The Gambia. This followed up an idea by their
grandchildren, Sam and Ellie, to ask their classmates to donate
pencils etc. to give to Abuko Nursery School, as part of their
Africa topic. Letters, which could be made into an envelope for
pupils to put crayons, pencils etc. and write a brief message, were
sent out to all pupils, and the response was terrific.
2800 pencils, crayons etc. were donated and Ann and Brian were
thrilled to receive the gifts on behalf of the Nursery School at
Abuko. The class thoroughly enjoyed the slideshow presentation,
playing the musical instruments and dressing up in Gambian clothes.
Ann and Brian were amazed by the intelligent questions the children
asked and the knowledge the children had of The Gambia.

The donated items will be taken to The Gambia in the next couple of
weeks, and as there were so many donations, it was decided that
Albion Lower Basic School* in Banjul should also receive some of the pencils. Sambojang, who is sponsored by Sam and Ellie’s family attends this
school, and it is hoped that a link will be formed with pupils at
Albion School and Year 2 pupils at Westdene. As a continuation of
their topic Mrs. Turner is taking The Gambia as her theme for a
future class assembly and Ann and Brian have been invited to attend.
On behalf of the two recipient schools, Ann and Brian said a huge
THANK YOU, to all Westdene pupils, parents and staff. Special thanks
to Sam and Ellie and also a huge vote of thanks to Mrs. Turner 2T
class teacher, for her absolute enthusiasm in organising this
fabulous effort.
