Mr Bakary Gitteh, headmaster of Bakalarr
School, arrived at Gatwick Airport on 8 July.
He visited several schools in
various parts of the UK during the first two weeks of his stay. The
first few schools were in Sussex:
9 July 2005 - Christ's
Hospital
Bakary was invited to attend lunch at
Christ's Hospital (often known as CH), Horsham, and he then watched the
traditional ceremony of Beating Retreat. (further
info: CH website) We were delighted to
receive this invitation for Bakary Gitteh to watch and participate in this
ceremony, which is always performed on the last day of the CH term.

On
10 July Bakary took time to recover from his journey and also visited Pippa's parents for family
tea. During this visit he collected another original watercolour of
a Gambian scene (painted by Pippa's Mum), which was raffled at
the Meet Bakary Day on Sunday 17 July.

11 July 2005 - Weald
School
Bakary visited the Weald School in Billingshurst,
West Sussex.
(further
info: Weald School website)
We (Bakary and Ian & Pippa
Howard) were warmly welcomed by Graham Humphries, who
then conducted a question and answer session with the Gambian
Headmaster to a combined assembly of Years 8 and 9 - about 500
children in total. This was followed by a 'whistle-stop' tour of the
impressive facilities enjoyed by pupils attending the
Weald. We would like to take this opportunity of thanking Graham and
all the other staff that we met for their hospitality.

Pageant hopes to set up a proper link between
the Weald School and Mr Gitteh's school in Bakalarr. We hope that
informal discussions will take place during the next few weeks to
enable us to increase the level of intercommunication between the
two schools. The children of both schools have now written letters
to each other and we hope that this will be the start of a really
good link.
