Pageant members and other helpers stuffed it full with furniture and many other items on Saturday 16 September at the old Leatherhead Food RA building, with the permission of the current site owners, Titan Properties Ltd. Our grateful thanks to Titan for providing the facilities for loading the container, for providing security while we were there and for allowing us to help ourselves to a lot of furniture and other items which were still in the building. Also our thanks to our splendid team of packers.
More details on this news page.

18 September 2017 - Cycling Croatia for Pageant In August 2017, Ben Johnstone and Fedor Stürken undertook a sponsored cycle ride along the Croatian coast. They rode from Split to Pula, a distance of about 450km, with only bikes and sleeping bags and raised over £1000 for Pageant. Ben & Fedor are ex-students of Christs Hospital school, which has strong links with Pageant. They raised most of sponsorship via a GoFundMe page which is still open for donations - so it's not too late for you to add a bit more!

Pageant has a number of projects in The Gambia where this money would make a tremendous difference. Ben and Fedor will soon be choosing which project (or projects) they would like to help, and it should be possible to get things started when a Pageant team visits The Gambia in November.

3 August 2017 - Pageant website is mobile friendly Mobile phones have now overtaken desktops and laptops as the main means of accessing the internet. We have a programme of converting all our main website pages to 'responsive' format - so that they can be accessed with equal ease no matter what the screen size of the device. At present 139 out of a total of 376 pages are in responsive format. This may seem to be a small proportion, but most of the unconverted pages are archives which are seldom accessed. Looking at pages viewed this year so far, 84% of these views were to responsive pages. Despite this most of our users are using large screen devices. Only about a quarter access our website from smartphones. See full details

28 February 2017 - Pageant's News from The Gambia A Pageant team of Pippa, Miriam, Richard, Kathy and Andrew have been in The Gambia. There was the usual programme of visits to schools and sponsored children, and the trip finished with two days of Microscopy Workshops. The Gambia is suffering frequent power outages. Most hotels have back-up generators, but the cost of fuel is extremely high, so the generators may only run at certain times. Internet service providers and mobile phone companies are also badly affected by the power cuts, and the result is that internet access is very difficult. Despite this Pippa and Andrew kept us up to date with posts to the Pageant News Blog and we have collected these posts on this web page. We hope to add extra photos soon.

Tourism is a vital part of the Gambian economy, and the recent crisis has seriously affected the tourism industry. 5 September 2016 - Ian Howard's Funeral Ian's funeral will take place in the Kingswood Chapel, Worthing Crematorium, Findon, BN14 0RQ on Thursday 15th September at 11.40 am. All are welcome to join the family after the service at Cissbury, Nepcote BN14 0SR.

3 September 2016 - Ian Howard It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that Ian Howard, chairman and co-founder of Pageant, died peacefully at home on Tuesday 30th August 2016.

We would like to pay tribute to his dedication and commitment to the charity over the past sixteen years. He will be sorely missed for many reasons, from his tireless efforts to improve the lives of so many Gambian children to his expert packing skills when faced with goods shipments to the Gambia, whether multi-pallet part-container loads or complete 40 foot container lorries.

31 July 2016 - Holly Howard's Coast to Coast Challenge - Helping others and fundraising for good causes seems to be a characteristic of the Howard family. Pippa and Ian's 11 year old granddaughter, Holly, decided to cycle across the width of England to raise money for Diabetes UK. Holly and her dad Gavin set off from Weston-Super-Mare on the Bristol Channel on 25 July. Their route took them through Bath, Reading and London, ending some 400km later at Margate on the English Channel.

They completed their challenge in six days, having covered 261 miles in just under 24 hours on the bike at an average speed 11 miles an hour. Before they started out, Holly was interviewed by Bristol Sport, so please have a look at this video, where she explains why she was doing this challenge. For more details and daily updates, please have a look at Holly's fundraising page. Holly's fundraising target was £5000, but so far they have raised over £8000 - and it's not too late to add to this!

Not much to do with The Gambia? Well in the UK around 6% of the population are diabetic, whereas in The Gambia it is around 10%. It is predicted that this could more than double by 2030, mainly due to an increase in Type 2 diabetes, which could be linked to large amounts of white rice in the diet (more information). People of Black African origin are up to three times more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than people of White European origin (more information). Diabetes UK is a major supporter of research which will benefit people with diabetes all over the world. So supporting Holly's Coast to Coast Challenge will indirectly help people in The Gambia.
